50 Years of Flight

The year 2026 marks a significant milestone in the history of flying disc sports, celebrating 50 years since the inception of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) — the global governing body of the sport — founded in 1976 by “Steady” Ed Headrick, who also helped formalise the modern rules, coined the term ‘disc golf’, and developed the modern disc golf basket.

Organised growth of the game took hold in both the United States and Australia. From humble beginnings in parks and schoolyards to the structured competitions and global communities we see today, the past five decades have shaped flying disc sports into a dynamic and enduring part of sporting culture.

In 2026, Australia proudly celebrates a remarkable milestone — 50 years of organised flying disc sports, dating back to the formation of the Australian Frisbee Association in 1976.

This 50 year anniversary is not just a reflection on where it all began, but a celebration of how far disc golf has come, and where it is headed.  The PDGA also turns 50 this year.  The sport is continuing to grow all over the world.

Throughout 2026, a series of events, celebrations, and commemorations will take place across the country to honour this golden anniversary. These will recognise not only the history of flying disc sports including disc golf in Australia, but also the people who have contributed to its growth, from pioneers of the 1970’s to today’s dedicated players and volunteers.

Keep an eye on the Fifty Years of Flight Facebook feed for snippets and photos documenting the history of the sport throughout the year, and your invitation to be part of the celebrations, share your stories, and help recognise this significant moment in Australian disc sports history.

Here’s to 50 years of flight, and many more to come.
